Your Packing Guide for a Summer Weekend Getaway

Packing Guide Feature Photo

Why is it that we always wait until the last minute to pack for a trip, and even then, we have no idea where to even begin?

I always struggle with packing for trips, especially with weekend getaways. It’s like we only need a few outfits, but we feel like we need 35, right?

Things can get out of control (at least for me) when I don’t have a list or something to keep me from packing my whole closet, so I hope you find this helpful!

Happy traveling 🙂

The Luggage

Choosing the right luggage can usually dictate how much you bring. The bigger bag, the more things you bring and the more overwhelmed with over packing you get.

I always suggest choosing luggage that is good quality yet that’s comfortable when carrying around. Most importantly, choose a luggage that has all of the storage.

I purchased a Lo & Sons O.G. Overnight Bag a few years ago, and it’s amazing! You have compartments for everything, and my shoulder never feels any strain when I carry it. The material also makes it incredibly easy to clean incase it gets a little roughed up at the airport.

Pro Tip: Try to pack a purse with you that you’ll be able to wear with any outfit.

The Travel Outfit

Jumpsuits and Dresses

Comfort is key y’all. I’m almost always cold in an airport or in a car on my weekend trips, so I make sure to where something that’s cozy yet also cute.

Jumpsuits are my new JAM. You feel like you’re wearing PJs without looking like it.

I’ve even worn the black off-the-shoulder jumpsuit I posted below to work with a denim jacket and jewelry. You look fancy enough for the office, and it’s so comfortable!

Pro Tip: Go for the jumpsuit or dress with pockets. You can throw your phone and ID in there when you’re hustling through the airport and you won’t have to dig through your bag every time. (Or am I the only one who does this?)

Slip-on Shoes

I’ve made the mistake of wearing complicated shoes to the airport one too many times.

I finally remembered to wear my slip-on shoes last trip, and it made such a difference going through security. (You know that feeling when everyone behind you is staring at you because you’re taking too long to take your shoes off?)

If your toes get cold like mine, consider the Lulu’s Leopard Flatform Sneakers or Sole Society’s Mule Sneaker that I posted below.

Pro Tip: Choose a pair of shoes you can wear with the majority of your outfits that you packed for your trip so you can save some room in your bag.

Sweaters and Pullovers

Is it just me, or are there two temperatures in an airport – freezing cold or sweltering hot?

I’ve finally figured out how to prepare for both. With your short-sleeved jumpsuit you can getaway with being comfortable in both warm and cold temperatures. And if you’re really freezing, I always bring a pullover that I can tie around my waist when I’m not using it.

Pro Tip: If you’re really cold, try using your pullover as a blanket. (Can you tell I’m cold a lot?)

Plus, if you have an early flight, the Pink Lily Need My Coffee Rainbow Graphic Pullover is perfect for letting people know you aren’t in the mood to chit chat.

The Daytime Outfit

In general, I try to stick to the basics when packing for a trip, but I also like packing outfits that I know I like and won’t disappoint.

  • For brunch: Pack yourself a cute maxi dress.
  • For a shopping day: Pack a t-shirt dress that can be dressed up or down.
  • For the sightseeing day: Pack a pair of denim shorts with a bodysuit.

Pro Trip: Pack accessories like the Belt Buckle Fedora Hat Dark-Camel or the Pearl Headband that goes with multiple outfits.

The Going-out Outfit

You can’t forget to pack that outfit for your night (or nights) out.

Summertime means fun pants and maxi-dresses. And of course, animal prints.

Pro Tip: Pack a dress that can be dressed up or down. That way it can double as a daytime and going-out outfit.

The Athletic Outfit

Whether you plan on working out on your trip or just dressing the part, I always like to pack an athletic outfit.

Pro Tip: If you have bulky sneakers you want to bring, but can’t fit them in your luggage. Wear them on the airplane or in the car on your way to your weekend getaway.

The Beach or Pool Outfit

Finally for my beach babes, don’t forget that outfit that you’ll wear when you’re either beachside or poolside soaking up that sun.

You’ll want something simple, yet cute that also fits in your bag.

Pro Tip: Bring a woven bag that you can use poolside and when you’re out on the town.

I’m pretty much contradicting myself by giving you a million options for every outfit. Most of the time, I’m guilty myself of stuffing my suitcase with more outfits than I need. But try to keep these basic takeaways in mind when packing for your weekend getaway to avoid getting distracted:

  • Keep it simple: I know, this is so much easier said than done. Focus on packing what you actually need and wear already instead of packing something you’ve always wanted to wear and think this may be your chance to make use of it (we all do it).
  • Pack versatile clothing items: Choose one pair of shoes that can be worn with multiple outfits. Pack a pair of jeans or bottoms that could be worn more than once or maybe a jacket that could be worn with every outfit. If you rewear something, it’s really fine and no one will judge!
  • Choose the right luggage: Choose a luggage  that will fit all of the essentials comfortable without overdoing it. Also, try to choose a bag that can be used while traveling and when you’re actually at your destination. Versatility is key people!

I hope this helps. Most importantly, try not to worry too much about what you bring and focus on having a great time because that’s all that matters!
